Care for people who have had a stroke has improved over the last two decades. However, without further action, due to changing demographics, the number of people having a stroke will increase by almost half, and the number of stroke survivors living with disability will increase by a third by 2035. The NHS Long Term Plan includes a series of commitments and ambitions for stroke services.
To improve stroke services we are:
- Working with the local Stroke Network to look at how we deliver early supported discharge and what we can do to improve access to rehabilitation in the community
- Reviewing our existing stroke pathways with patients, carers, NHS professionals, community providers, Healthwatch, county council staff and The Stroke Association
- Considering the commitments and abmitions for stroke services set out in the NHS Long Term Plan
- Discussing with NHS England whether the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital could provide thrombectomy services in future - this is a relatively new treatment for removing a clot that causes a stroke.
